Follow the steps below to add third-party drivers (USB) for peripheral devices such as USB Mobile broadband modems, printers, scanners etc.

Step 1: Get Drivers from PC

The Step is to get the x86 version of the drivers from PC. For ARM, please contact the supplier of the peripheral to get the sys/inf files.

  1. Windows 10 has built-in USB 3.0 drivers.

  2. So you can use USB devices through USB 3.0 ports directly without installing USB 3.0 drivers manually.

  3. Due to this reason, many manufacturers hasn’t update USB 3.0 drivers for Windows 10. In this post, you will learn how to download and update Intel® USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller driver in Windows 10 if you have to install the driver manually.

  4. There are 2 ways introduced here you can use to download the official Intel USB 3.0 drivers.

  5. Just choose an easier way on your case. Way 1: Download and Install the Drivers from Manufacturers ManuallyWay 2: Download and Update the Driver Automatically (Recommended). When you download drivers manually, ensure that you download the drivers from official manufacturers, which are definitely safe to your computer. The official manufacturers could be your PC manufacturer (Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Asus, etc.) and the device manufacturer (Intel).

Step 2: Create a driver package

The Driver package contains the references(InfSource)to the Inf file for the driver and also lists all the files referenced in the Inf file. You can author the driver .wm.xml using Add-IoTDriverPackage.

New-IoTInf2Cab creates the package xml file and also builds the cab file directly.

It is recommended to go to your PC manufacturer’s website to check for the latest USB driver for Windows 10 first, as they may customize the driver.

Before you get started, ensure that you know the PC model and the specific operating system that you are using (Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 10 32-bit).

  • The downloaded driver is always in self-installer format. If you fail to install the Windows 7 driver in Windows 10 using setup file (.exe), you may need to install the driver manually step by step using .inf file.
  • If this is your case, follow these steps to install the Windows 7 driver.

The device will reboot into the update OS (showing gears) to install the packages and will reboot again to main OS. This process can take a few minutes.

  • Unzip the downloaded driver file to a specific location.

  • Open Device Manager. Expand category Universal Serial Bus controllers and find Intel® USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller.
