Lower images require less memory to edit—it’s as simple as that.
The ideal aspect ratio for an image that is intended to be tileable is 1:1. There is no ideal resolution, but I prefer to work in 4K (4096 x 4096) or higher when creating textures I intend to use over and over again.
I also don’t like being dependent on something that might not always be available if I’m using Photoshop on a different workstation.
